The National Sand and Stone Tipper Truck Drivers Association has leveled serious allegations against military personnel, accusing them of a violent crackdown during an operation in Afienya. According to the association, the encounter resulted in several drivers sustaining injuries that required immediate hospitalization. The incident has sparked significant tension between the local transport operators and the security forces, with the association characterizing the military's actions as an overreach of authority.
Representatives of the association claim that the security personnel employed excessive force, including physical assaults and the destruction of property. Beyond the physical injuries reported, the drivers allege that soldiers damaged their tipper trucks and seized several mobile phones belonging to workers at the site. The association describes these actions as unprovoked and a direct threat to the safety of their members who were reportedly carrying out their routine duties when the operation occurred.
The drivers maintain that their operations are entirely legal and conducted under the oversight of relevant regulatory bodies. They assert that the operators involved hold valid licenses and have remained in full compliance with all environmental and mining regulations. Despite this regulatory adherence, the association claims they are being unjustly denied access to their worksites, leading to significant financial losses and disruptions in the supply of essential construction materials.
In response to the alleged brutality, the association has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the conduct of the military officers involved. They have formally appealed to President John Mahama to intervene in the matter to ensure the protection of their rights and the restoration of order. The group warns that without a swift resolution and clear accountability, the ongoing friction could further destabilize the livelihoods of thousands of workers dependent on the sand and stone industry.
