Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has initiated fresh legal action at the Accra High Court, refiling defamation lawsuits against Sammy Gyamfi and Eric Adjei. This move follows a recent court decision to strike out the initial suits on procedural grounds, which had temporarily halted the Minority Leader's pursuit of legal redress for alleged character assassination.
The legal actions target specific statements made by the defendants on major media outlets. The suit against Sammy Gyamfi, an official with the Ghana Gold Board, pertains to comments made during a Joy FM programme. Simultaneously, Afenyo-Markin has filed a separate case against Eric Adjei of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) regarding allegedly defamatory remarks made during a broadcast on Peace FM. Both cases seek to address public assertions that the Minority Leader claims have unfairly tarnished his reputation.
The dispute is rooted in broader political disagreements concerning the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme. Afenyo-Markin had previously been vocal in his criticisms of the programme, citing concerns over its implementation and alleging significant financial losses. The subsequent public reactions and commentary from Gyamfi and Adjei regarding these criticisms form the basis of the current defamation claims.
With the cases now formally refiled, the Accra High Court is expected to set dates for the hearing of these matters. The legal proceedings represent a significant confrontation between the Minority Leader and officials associated with state institutions, highlighting the ongoing tension surrounding national financial oversight and the limits of political discourse in the media.
