Nana Kwame Ampaw Addo-Frempong, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, has pledged to finance the medical education of three outstanding students from Bright Senior High School. The students, who achieved straight 8As in the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and reached the semi-finals of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), each received GH‵20,000 to support their transition into medical school.
In addition to the financial support for the prospective medical students, the MP also recognized the efforts of six other students who reached the quarter-finals of the NSMQ. These students were presented with laptops to aid their ongoing academic pursuits. The initiative is part of a broader effort to incentivize academic excellence within the constituency, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The gesture aims to ensure that high-performing students have the necessary tools and resources to succeed at the tertiary level.
Local education officials have lauded the MP's intervention, noting its potential to improve the community's academic standing and inspire younger students to strive for excellence. Richard Kwabena Damoah, one of the beneficiaries of the medical sponsorship, expressed his gratitude during the presentation. He emphasized that the financial assistance would significantly alleviate the economic burden on his family, allowing him to focus entirely on the rigorous demands of medical school.
This sponsorship highlights the growing trend of legislative support for high-achieving students in Ghana, where the substantial cost of medical education can often act as a barrier for brilliant but underprivileged youth. By targeting students who have already demonstrated their academic prowess in national competitions like the NSMQ, the Abuakwa North MP seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not derail the careers of the nation's future healthcare professionals.
