The Gambian government has entered into a major concession agreement with Zoomlion Gambia Integrated Waste Solutions Limited, a subsidiary of the Ghana-based Jospong Group of Companies. President Adama Barrow oversaw the signing ceremony at the State House in Banjul, marking a significant step toward modernizing the nation's sanitation infrastructure. The partnership is designed to address long-standing environmental challenges through the establishment of state-of-the-art integrated waste treatment facilities across the country.
The project is structured to transform The Gambia's waste landscape by decommissioning existing, inefficient dumpsites and replacing them with modern facilities capable of converting waste into valuable resources. These centers will focus on producing organic compost and recovered materials, supporting the country's environmental sustainability goals. Beyond its ecological impact, the initiative is expected to stimulate the Gambian economy by creating numerous jobs in both the technical and operational sectors of the sanitation industry.
Implementation of the agreement will occur in two distinct phases. The first phase focuses on the immediate remediation of current disposal sites and the management of solid waste. Following this initial stage, the project is slated to expand into liquid waste management, ensuring a comprehensive national approach to sanitation. Key stakeholders at the signing emphasized that local engagement and national development are central to the collaboration, which seeks to leverage the Jospong Group’s extensive expertise in waste technology.
By partnering with a major West African conglomerate, the Gambian government aims to apply proven regional solutions to local environmental issues. This collaboration reflects a growing trend of intra-continental cooperation in infrastructure and essential services. As the project moves forward, it is anticipated to significantly improve public health outcomes and establish a sustainable framework for urban waste management throughout The Gambia.
