The AfriKan Continental Union Consult (ACUC) has formally appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to use Ghana’s influential position within the African Union (AU) to champion the creation of a unified continental government. The group argued that the time has come for the practical implementation of long-standing integration goals to drive real economic transformation across the continent. This call comes as Ghana continues to play a pivotal role in regional diplomacy and economic integration efforts under the current administration.
Speaking on the matter, ACUC leader Benjamin Anyagre Aziginaateeg highlighted the historical struggle for African unity and the persistent obstacles that hinder progress today. He identified fragmented markets and deep-seated political divisions as significant barriers to the continent’s collective growth. Mr. Aziginaateeg emphasized that while many commitments to integration exist on paper, there is a critical need for robust mechanisms to translate these promises into tangible results for the African people. He noted that the lack of a functional, unified political structure often slows down the resolution of cross-border challenges.
The ACUC specifically pointed to President Mahama’s ‘Accra Reset’ initiative as a potential launchpad for this broader continental economic transformation. By leveraging such national strategies on a regional scale, the group believes Africa can better secure its economic future and the well-being of future generations. The group’s message underscores a growing demand from civil society for African heads of state to prioritize functional unity over ceremonial cooperation, placing Ghana at the center of the debate on the African Union's future evolution.
