Dr. Gloria Achempim-Ansong, the Rector of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM), has appealed for a significant increase in investment toward specialist nursing and midwifery infrastructure. Speaking at the college’s 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Dr. Achempim-Ansong emphasised that expanded resources are essential to producing the high-calibre professionals required to navigate Ghana’s evolving healthcare landscape and meet the rising demand for specialised medical services. During the event, the Rector highlighted the urgency of upgrading training facilities and securing more equipment to support the college's expanding curriculum. She noted that while the GCNM currently offers a diverse range of specialist programmes, the pressure on existing infrastructure is growing. This call for support aims to ensure that nursing and midwifery graduates are equipped with the sophisticated skills necessary to handle complex clinical cases across the country’s health facilities. Supporting the Rector’s call, the keynote speaker, Dr. Eva Mensah from the Ghana Health Service, underlined the critical link between adequate staffing and the overall resilience of the healthcare system. Dr. Mensah argued that without a robust workforce of well-trained specialists, the system remains vulnerable to shocks. The AGM also served as a platform for the induction of new members into the college and the presentation of awards to outstanding residents who demonstrated excellence in their professional practice. The 11th AGM underscored the GCNM's commitment to advancing the professional standards of nursing and midwifery in Ghana. By advocating for improved infrastructure, the college seeks to bridge the gap between current training capacities and the specialized care needs of the Ghanaian public. The successful induction of new specialists marks a step forward in strengthening the nation’s health workforce, provided the necessary financial and material support follows.
