The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) conducted a major enforcement exercise on October 27, 2026, to remove unauthorized structures surrounding the Achimota New Overhead Ayalolo bus stop. Led by the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the operation was designed to reclaim public land and ensure that the transport terminal functions as intended for both commuters and transport operators. The move follows concerns regarding the increasing encroachment of public spaces by traders, which has historically complicated traffic flow in the busy Achimota area.
The presence of traders and illegal structures in the vicinity had significantly hindered the operations of commercial vehicles, particularly the Ayalolo bus service. According to the AMA, these unauthorized occupations obstructed the designated areas for loading and unloading passengers, causing unnecessary delays and safety risks for pedestrians and transit users. By clearing these encroachments, the assembly aims to restore order and allow the high-capacity buses to maneuver more efficiently, which is expected to decrease turnaround times and improve the reliability of public transport in the capital.
Beyond immediate traffic relief, this exercise is part of a broader regulatory initiative by the AMA to manage public spaces and regulate urban activity across Accra. The assembly emphasized that maintaining clear access to transport hubs is critical for easing chronic traffic congestion. Officials indicated that they intend to sustain the decongestion efforts by monitoring the site to prevent traders from returning, ensuring that the reclaimed spaces remain available for transit operations and the free movement of the public.
