The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced a significant update to security protocols at Accra International Airport, requiring all departing travelers to arrive at the terminal at least three hours before their scheduled flights. This directive follows the implementation of a new mandatory luggage pre-screening process situated at the entrance of the Departure Hall. These enhanced measures are designed to bolster aviation security and manage the increasing volume of passenger traffic while ensuring that travelers have sufficient time to complete check-in and immigration formalities without the risk of missing their flights.
In a strategic partnership with the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the GACL has deployed high-tech scanning machines and specialized sniffer dogs at the terminal entrance. This additional layer of security, which occurs before passengers reach the check-in counters, specifically targets the detection of illicit substances and the prevention of illegal trafficking. By conducting these screenings at the threshold of the departures area, authorities aim to secure the facility more effectively and deter criminal activity before it enters the more sensitive operational zones of the airport.
Alongside the new screening protocols, the GACL has restricted access to the Departure Hall exclusively to ticketed passengers. Non-traveling individuals and well-wishers are now barred from entering the hall to ease congestion and streamline the flow of traffic within the terminal. This move complements recent technological upgrades in Terminals 2 and 3, which include the installation of advanced security equipment and an Automatic Tray Return System. These improvements have modernized the screening experience, generally allowing passengers to keep large electronic devices and footwear in place during routine checks, though additional profiling may still be required at the discretion of security personnel.
The GACL emphasizes that these measures are part of an ongoing commitment to balancing robust security with passenger convenience. While the extra screening step adds a layer to the pre-flight process, the upgraded scanning technology is intended to keep the overall experience efficient and reduce waiting times. Travelers are strongly encouraged to adjust their schedules to account for potential traffic delays and the new arrival window. By adhering to these guidelines, the airport administration aims to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly environment for all international travelers passing through Ghana’s primary aviation gateway.
