The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has dismissed an application by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, to halt a defamation suit filed against him by legal journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini. The ruling, delivered on October 21, 2026, by a three-member panel chaired by Justice Eric Baah, also awarded costs of GH₵10,000 against Baffoe. This decision effectively clears the path for the long-standing legal action to proceed in the Kumasi High Court. The suit stems from allegations broadcast in April 2025 on Wontumi TV and Radio, where Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, is alleged to have labeled Anyenini as corrupt, dishonest, and a thief. Anyenini, a prominent lawyer and media personality, has denied all such claims and is seeking substantial damages for injury to his reputation. Despite the case being initiated over 18 months ago, the court noted that the NPP regional chairman has yet to file a formal Statement of Defence. This latest ruling marks Baffoe's third unsuccessful attempt to block or dismiss the defamation proceedings through various procedural applications. Previous efforts to have the suit struck out have similarly been rejected by the judiciary. The Court of Appeal’s decision focused on the procedural merits of the stay application rather than the substance of the defamation claims themselves. With this bid dismissed, the legal process will now return to the High Court for a determination on the actual merits of Anyenini’s claims and Baffoe’s eventual defense.
