Farmers returning from their fields in Sombo, located within the Wa Municipality, discovered a newborn baby boy abandoned in a nearby bush on Wednesday. The infant was found naked and crying, drawing the attention of the farmers who were passing by. The quick intervention of the locals ensured the child was safely retrieved and transported to a medical facility for immediate care.
Abubakari Seidu, the Assembly Member for the Sombo area, arrived at the scene shortly after the discovery. He expressed deep shock and dismay at the situation, noting that such an incident was rare and distressing for the community. The baby was subsequently taken to the Sombo Health Centre, where a midwife identified as Rafida took charge of the infant's initial medical assessment and feeding. Reports indicate that the baby was provided with formula and care to stabilize his condition after being found without any clothing or protection.
The incident has sparked a wave of concern among local residents, who have called for greater support for mothers in distress rather than the abandonment of infants. Local community leaders have officially reported the matter to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. Authorities are currently working to identify and locate the mother of the child. Meanwhile, the newborn remains under medical supervision as the investigation into the circumstances of his abandonment continues.
