On September 24, 2026, the Government of Ghana, in a joint effort with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), successfully facilitated the repatriation of 180 Ghanaian nationals from Libya. This mission is part of an ongoing commitment to assist vulnerable citizens stranded abroad and ensure their safe and dignified return home. The initiative underscores the collaborative efforts of regional and international bodies to address the challenges faced by migrants in precarious conditions.
The group of returnees comprised 153 males and 27 females, including children and infants. Upon their arrival at the airport, they were received by a high-level delegation of government officials and international partners, including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The reception served as the first step in a broader process intended to transition these individuals from the hardships they faced in Libya back into their local communities under a framework of safe and orderly migration.
Welcoming the returnees, H.E. Mohammed Lawan Gana, the Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana, urged the citizens to view their homecoming as a "fresh start" and a significant opportunity for personal growth. He emphasized the importance of resilience, encouraging the individuals to engage in skills development and entrepreneurship programs available to them. Gana noted that the return symbolizes a new beginning and that the support provided by the community and state is vital for their long-term success.
Beyond the immediate logistical return, the initiative focuses heavily on sustainable reintegration. The returnees are expected to receive livelihood support and access to vocational training to mitigate the risks associated with irregular migration in the future. This ongoing partnership between Ghana, the IOM, and ECOWAS highlights a strategic regional approach to managing migration flows effectively while prioritizing the welfare and dignity of Ghanaian citizens returning from the diaspora.
