Thirteen Dead and 18 Injured in Tragic Head-On Collision on Accra-Aflao Highway

A devastating road traffic accident on the Accra-Aflao Highway has claimed the lives of thirteen people and left 18 others with varying degrees of injury. The collision, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, involved two commercial vehicles—a Toyota Hiace and a Ford Transit—near the MotherKope area, specifically by the God’s Love Herbal Clinic. The tragedy has once again raised urgent concerns regarding road safety on one of Ghana’s busiest international transit corridors.

According to preliminary investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the crash occurred on a hilly section of the highway as the vehicles traveled in opposite directions. Divisional Officer Grade II Ebenezer Yenzu of the GNFS reported that the Ford Transit was ascending the hill when it struck the side of the Toyota Hiace, which was descending. The force of the impact resulted in immediate fatalities, while several passengers remained trapped within the mangled wreckage of the vehicles until emergency responders arrived.

Firefighters from the Sege Fire Station were dispatched to the scene shortly after the alert was raised. The rescue team worked to extricate the survivors and recover the deceased from the crumpled steel. The 18 injured victims, several of whom were described as being in critical condition, were rushed to the Sege Polyclinic and other nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment. Following the rescue operations, the GNFS and local police worked to clear the debris and wreckage from the road, eventually restoring the flow of traffic on the busy highway.

As families begin the difficult process of identifying their loved ones, authorities are expected to conduct a more thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. This latest incident adds to a worrying trend of high-fatality accidents on the Sege-Ada stretch of the Accra-Aflao Highway. Road safety advocates are likely to renew calls for increased enforcement of traffic regulations and potential engineering interventions on treacherous hilly sections of the route to prevent future loss of life.
